Ideas are worthless
“To me, ideas are worth nothing unless they are executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.”
Derek Sivers, Anything You Want
How many times do you sit in a meeting and watch as idea after idea is offered up as the solution to the latest crises? It’s not just the professional services sector that likes to dream up another (new) way of delivering excellent service etc. Practically every business has a wish list.
But the truth of the matter is that without brilliant execution, over the long haul, ideas are worthless.
This might sound contemptuous of those people who are always thinking outside the box, and heaven knows some sectors need an injection of life, but an idea without doing is just that.
My advice is to have an execution agenda. That’s where the return on investment should be focused. The more you start and finish the greater will be your success.
Of course, some projects will forever remain on a high state of alert but if all you do is start a project thinking that in short order it will solve your current crisis, the less likely it is to work. Think execution. Nothing else.
If you take this message to heart, one thing will quickly emerge. You will stop chasing so many opportunities, and focus only on those you are prepared to put your life and soul into.
The thing is execution, brilliant execution, soon sorts out those people who are prepared to live on Hell’s edge and those that are merely paying lip service to the final outcome.
