Climbing the (wrong) ladder of Success. – Julian Summerhayes

Legal practice is hard. It requires stamina, a thick skin and a high degree of acuity in understanding the task at hand.

It’s not going to get any easier, and over the next 18 months there are likely to emerge a swathe of changes that will make many practitioners question their faith in legal practice.

Many things will be out of their control – further legislative reforms, the juddering economy and how many competitors emerge – but it will be hard not to be affected by the creep and the possibility that their esteemed role will disappear overnight.

Check: Don’t try to control things that are inherently out of your control but instead look to control the one thing that is within your control; namely your philosophy.

  • Why are you in law?
  • What do you stand for?
  • What does success look like?
  • Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
  • What areas of law float your boat?
  • What doesn’t float your boat?
  • Do you like working with people?
  • Could you manage a team?

I think you get the impression.

Now might be a good idea to start planning your career. Sounds contrived but if you don’t set aside some core time for this exercise then you are likely to find yourself in the wrong position. Or to put it another way you will have climbed the ladder of success only to find that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall.
