Let’s just max out – Julian Summerhayes

No one cares about climate change. Even yesterday, as I endured another day in the soul-sucking office, the only topic of conversation was foreign holidays and the hassle factor of taking a CO2-emitting flight to another far-flung location.

You can’t blame people: having surrendered their liberty to the pandemic, who wouldn’t want to stretch their legs and go on another international saunter?

Well not me — and I don’t say that to be virtuous; I’m stating a fact.

The thing is, and not that I’m an expert, but if I read the existential banns correctly, we’re not so much running out of time, but we’ve run out of time; and that’s why I’ve lost hope of any government, lest still a ‘leader’, doing the right thing for the world and our non-human cousins. Even qua humans, it’s all talk and no action; or as Greta said:

‘You can shove your climate crisis up your arse’

I can understand where she’s coming from.

Anyhow, as regards the kids, you know the ones whose future we’ve stolen, what message do we give them?

Disavow your parents’ habits?

I don’t know. Sure, they’ll be more responsible than us or at least will want to be but when they too are stuck in the meatgrinder of work, what are they supposed to do to lighten the load? Go plant some trees, collect rubbish from the beaches or work pro bono? They might but when they see how the supposed adults are behaving more than a few might shrug a faux shrug and do what my generation did so successfully for the last 50 years; namely, exactly what they liked in pursuit of a comfort-seeking, screw-the-world type of life.

Like I say so often, I may have this all wrong but you’ll understand the dilemma for all of us particularly when we can’t even get some countries to stop burning coal. Burning coal for christ sake. It’s like we know that something’s really bad for us but we like it too much to give it up.

Onwards — until I’m stopped or give up the ghost.
