Beginner’s mind – Julian Summerhayes

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few” ― Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: Informal Talks on Zen Meditation and Practice

I was up early this morning.

No need of course; it’s how life unfolds.

The insight that landed was we too often bring our history (i.e. stale, old thinking) to bear on life in order, we think, to make sense of this moment. When I say make sense, I don’t just mean to interpret it, but instead to judge, to condemn, to always find something that we dislike. Sometimes we find bliss but in that space, normally (at least for me), my mind is quiet — no thinking.

As you go about the day, ask yourself where you’re projecting and not simply accepting what is.

Trust me, this isn’t hippie, woo woo sh*t. This is real: if you can leave alone your thinking and not layer on great gobs of “I know what this means” thinking, then you’ll find, hopefully, that things feel a little easier.
