I’ve not gone away. Nor do I have any intention of doing so. If anything, my will to create is stronger than ever.
I had hoped to publish a series of essays (or at least two by now), but I’ve been caught up with work, and a slew of projects that have limited my writing to daily posts on Livejournal. I know it’s a poor excuse but I’m not too concerned not least because writing is writing and in the end that’s all that matters.
But there’s a bigger issue.
When I first started with this site (this is the third major change), I saw myself writing on message; namely, at that time, social media allied to the world of professional services. I blogged assiduously and whilst it got me noticed, it never felt right in the sense that I wanted my audience to move the needle from Web 1.0 to 2.0 but it never happened (we’re talking nearly five years ago). Thereafter, I didn’t so much as give up but I felt I’d said everything that needed to be said, and wanted to move on to other topics, which I’ve done.
Looking outward now, I can see a marked change but not nearly to the extent that I’d hoped for. For a start, people are still wedded to the idea of corporate speak, and can’t seem to distinguish their personality from what they expect clients to want to hear. I could go on but the simple point is, no matter how strongly I feel about best practice, a blog is not the best medium to move the needle. Instead, it’s about speaking, coaching and consulting — the more face time I can engineer the better. That’s not to say that there’s no place for content but social media is not the problem but rather people development, the moribund partnership structure and a legacy of under investment.
With this background, I hope you’ll understand why: (a) I want to write on other topics; and (b) the timing doesn’t have to be so frequent, particularly when I want to put my energy into writing books and speaking.
I’d like to say when and on what subject you can expect me to write here, but I’d rather just publish it and be damned. At least that way, I’ll not put myself in a position where I write for writing’s sake and not from the heart.
