Personal Development – Daily living – Julian Summerhayes

Oh no I hear you cry, not another stream of consciousness. No, the theme is the same: maximisation of our daily resource: time.

When did you last feel that you exceeded your expectations of what you wanted to achieve in a single day? Not very often I would guess.

I remember when I had to deal with the failure of my recruitment business that one book that I turned to was How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, Dale Carnegie, Cedar, 1987. Not that I knew who Dale Carnegie was (duh…) but because I liked the title as it summed up my mood at the time. It starts at Chapter 1 with the title: “Live in “Day-tight Compartments”. What the heck does that mean? A day is a day. I suppose the best exposition of this is summed up on the opening page (quoting Thomas Carlyle):

“Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand.”

I don’t know about you but how many times do you find yourself either rehearsing yesterday’s events or looking forward to what you might have promised to do. I don’t bother any more. Just think TODAY and try to achieve what you believe is the best use of you best time.
