“If you are the dealer, I’m out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame”
— Leonard Cohen
I feel I’m hiding away, that, or keeping my powder dry.
Don’t be shy.
Lockdown is easing and there’s a glimmer of hope and yet…I still have a grinding sense that not much has changed; namely, we’re still obsessed with the project called me.
It’s so desperately sad.
Why are we here?
What’s our purpose?
Who are we?
But we never go that deep.
I’m sure you’ll think me a little odd: a long-in-the-tooth lawyer who shouts the odds. Aren’t we meant to be conservative with a very small ‘c’? Of course, but that’s never been my way. I’ve never taken things at face value and ALWAYS questioned the status quo — whatever the hell that means.
Not to blot my copybook but I don’t appear to get, or certainly not very often, this obsession in the modern world with the bland exhortation to constantly suck up to our better self. Where’s the shadow stuff? You know, the sh*t that we drag around? After all, the light always casts a shadow, doesn’t it? On the question of the shadow self, if you’ve never read Robert Bly’s book “A Little Book on the Human Shadow” then I suggest you do. It will articulate better than any other book the deformation of the soul that arises mercilessly and without repentance.
And your point Summerhayes?
Be honest.
Be authentic.
Be you.
Only then can you face the world on your terms and not be subsumed by the crowd.
As a passing thought, perhaps I should change my strapline to something along the lines of:
more you; less them.
Onwards dear readers.
If you’re able to support my work then I’ve put up a ‘support’ page. Thank you in advance; even a small amount helps me continue to write these blogs and maintain my site.
