You’re looking in the wrong direction – Julian Summerhayes

“Man suffers only because he takes seriously what the gods made for fun.

No, it’s not out there.

But of course, everyone tells you otherwise.

In the end, it leaves you cold.

What’s my purpose?

Who am I?

Why am I here?

My advice: sit still, drop the pretence and just ‘be’.

I know, it doesn’t sound much, but the moment you chase the faux dream is the moment you go to your thinking mind.

And you’re dead…from the inside out.

To be honest, I’m fed up saying the saying thing; namely, you are not your thoughts. Yes, you have thoughts — you’ll never stop them — but they’re not you, anymore than you can say that your brain or your arm is you.

Purpose, passion, goals, success, realisation. Forget them.

Your job, if you need one, is to go within, i.e. radical self-enquiry.

If you don’t get it, don’t do it.

Pull up the mental drawbridge and just do your thing. Boring. The same. And…it goes nowhere.

But if you’re willing to start over, the seminal question is: “Who am I?”

Yes, who are you, really?

And it’s a question that never stops.
